RefWorks - Advanced Features

Browse Your RefWorks Account

Browse your references by Author, Descriptor (subject), or Periodical (journal title)Click Search from the RefWorks top naviation bar.

  1. Click Search on the top navigation bar.
  2. From the drop-down menu, select how you would like to browse: By Author, By Descriptor, or By Periodical.
  3. Scroll through the list and click the desired term.
  4. The reference(s) associated with that author, descriptor, or periodical will be displayed.

Search Your RefWorks Account

Search for terms directly using the "Search Your RefWorks Database" box or the Advanced Search feature

The Search Your RefWorks Database box, in the upper right corner of your RefWorks screen, searches all the fields within your RefWorks records.  Enter a single term or phrase in the Search RefWorks box and click the Search button.

To search within the text of any attachments as well as your records, click the paper clip icon to the right of the search box. The red circle will disappear and you will include attachments in your search.

Search your records using the search bar; simply search your records or click paper clip to include attachments in your search.


In the Advanced Search you may choose a particular field to search, such as Author, Title, Periodical, Descriptor, Abstract, etc.  This is similar to the field search menus you see in the article databases.

  1. Select Advanced from the Search menu on the top navigation bar.
  2. Select the desired field to search from the drop-down menu.
  3. Type a word or phrase in the search box.
  4. Add additional search boxes by clicking on the green circle with the plus sign (optional).
  5. Leave radio button on All References to search everything, or choose a specific folder to search. 
  6. Click on the Search button in the bottom right corner.

In the Advanced Search, select a field to search from the drop-down menu. Search all references or specify a folder. You can click the green circle icon to add more search boxes.
